I'm quite the fan of Blue Oyster Cult, even if its certainly not a band I grew up with, being far too young for that. Sure, there are many bands which I discovered in childhood, primarily from my father's taste in heavy metal and rock, but BOC is a more recent discovery. One which has resulted in a binge-listening of all their songs.
Now is the time the moon is in alignment, With the unknown zodiac, the untold sign....
It begin like all classic tales of eldritch horror: cults of deranged maniacs seeing 'the signs' in the sky and making their move. What exactly those moves are doesn't really matter at this point in the game, only that strange, alien and demented cults with horrible motives and methods are wreaking havoc.
Now is the time that the apes take wing
And we recognize them from that Oz thing...
This is where the twist come in from the usual Lovecraftian stuff: the 'Old Gods' are the Gods of the human subconscious (or something along those lines), who inspired all the ideas we've ever had. Pretty much every myth and every modern classic of fantasy and horror is the byproduct of their influence, we just don't realize it. Each of the Old Gods is a realm of it's own, in a way. What we humans imagined is a sanitized echo of the nightmarish reality they embody.
The game should make use of Kelipah once the twist of the nature of the Old Gods is revealed. These Kelipah are horrific and twisted, nightmarish versions of iconic works of fantastical fiction, like the Wizard of Oz, Alice in Wonderland* or other famous books, preferably those in the Public Domain. In fact, them going into the Public Domain is what has allowed them to grow so powerful as the link between the Old Gods and humans as grown stronger now that more and more individuals use these stories. The more people use a story and setting, the more they subconsciously draw from that reality, even if its just a faint and distorted echo.
*You should totally milk 'A Red And Pleasant Land' for this one.
