Published settings are the worst thing for your creativity, at least when taken at face value. This may seem hypocritical at first coming from a guy who run Exalted using Godbound and has posted at length about other settings and how worthwhile their ideas are. Hell I've ran quite a few games based off established intellectual properties/franchises.
Here's the thing: is the setting a tool for you, or are you the tool of the setting? Do you use the established setting and idea as a foundation to build upon, either by reworking a flawed setting to something more usable or perhaps to have wealth of material to draw upon and create your own locales, characters and stories within that world...or are you being a slave to metaplot, established characters and not allowing things to change because of some supposedly sacrosanct 'canon' probably written either by a hack or another fanboy.
Make the world your bitch or make your own campaign world: Its a hard lesson I learned trying to run games using established settings. The constant worry of 'breaking canon' or of being corrected by a player and feeling the need to correct myself. To hell with that!
